Hot tubs are abandoned in backyards more than almost any other large household item. Why? Because they're heavy (300-900 lbs empty), hard to dismantle, and most disposal facilities won't take them whole.
After removing dozens, here's the honest breakdown.
The Real Cost
In Northern Virginia, expect to pay $300–$500 for professional hot tub removal. Pricing varies based on:
- **Size and material** (larger fiberglass tubs cost more than smaller acrylic ones)
- **Location and access** (deck-mounted tubs require more careful work)
- **Power and plumbing status** (we don't disconnect utilities, you do)
- **Disposal complexity** (most tubs need to be cut up before disposal)
Built-in spa tubs (set into decking) typically cost $500-$800 because of the dismantling complexity.
Why You Can't Just Drag It Away
Most hot tubs weigh 300-900 pounds empty, and many are 7+ feet wide. Even with a forklift, you can't fit one through a typical gate or doorway. They have to be cut into manageable pieces.
This is why removal is priced separately from standard junk hauling — it's really a demolition job, not a hauling job.
The Process
Here's what a professional removal looks like:
1. **Walk-through and quote.** We assess access, look for power and plumbing connections, and confirm the price.
2. **You disconnect utilities.** Electrical, water, gas — these should be handled by you or your electrician/plumber before we arrive.
3. **We drain (if needed).** Most tubs have some residual water. We drain it with submersible pumps or siphons.
4. **Cut and dismantle.** Sawzalls with metal-cutting blades cut through the fiberglass shell, plumbing, and frame. Sections are removed one at a time.
5. **Protective coverings.** Decks and yards get protective mats to prevent damage from dismantling work.
6. **Load and haul.** Sections are loaded onto our truck. Site is swept clean.
Total time: 2-4 hours for most tubs. Built-in and complex jobs may take 4-6 hours.
Why DIY Usually Fails
We've been called many times to finish DIY hot tub removals gone wrong. Common problems:
- **Wrong tools.** Regular saws don't cut through reinforced fiberglass cleanly.
- **Deck damage.** Trying to drag a tub damages decks worse than the tub itself.
- **Injuries.** Hot tubs are heavy, awkward, and sharp once cut.
- **Disposal access.** Most landfills won't accept hot tub sections without prior arrangement.
If you're determined to DIY, expect to spend $200+ in tools and rent a truck. By the time you're done, professional removal looks like a bargain.
